The Wichita Wild of the Indoor Football League (IFL) will play host to the winless Alaska Wild (0-12) on Thursday July 2nd. For playoff-bound Wichita (7-6), this will be their final game of the regular season for 2009. Wichita successfully clinched the Central Division's third and final playoff spot on June 27th with a 73-33 blowout win over the RiverCity Rage. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Hartman Arena and doors will open at 6:00 PM.
Quarterback Dixie Wooten is fresh off his debut for Wichita and he did not disappoint. In the contest, Wooten passed for 171 yards and a Wild franchise record seven touchdowns through the air. Wide receiver Clinton Solomon managed to be on the receiving end of five of those Wooten touchdown passes, bringing his touchdown total to 20 on the season.
Despite the display of Wichita's best offensive performance of the season, the Wild struggled to gain yards on the ground for the first time in several weeks. Running back Darius Fudge gained 14 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown, his lowest rushing total of the season. However, Wichita and MVP Candidate Fudge will look to get their rushing game back on track this week as the face an Alaska defense which ranks last in the IFL in terms of rushing yards allowed.
On the defensive side of the ball, Wichita's Randy Kelly set a new franchise record last week for interceptions in a season after he intercepted a Maurice Avery pass on his own goal line and returned it for a Wichita touchdown. The interception was Kelly?s fifth of the season and he is also tied for the team lead in tackles this season with linebacker LaMont Reid with 65.
